    Black Codes
    The Black Codes were designed to contol African Americans. But some didn't allow African Americans to rent land, and they made it easy for white employers to take advantage of them. Some even allowed officials to fine or arrest African Americans who didnt have jobs.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights  Act of 1866
    The Civil Rights Act gave the federal government the power to to protect African American rights in any state affair. It also granted African Americans citizenship. This act countered the the 1857 case, Dred Scott v. Sandford.
  • Recontruction Acts

    Recontruction Acts
    This required Confederate states to form a new government. This divided the 10 defiant states into military districts. Each district was governed by an army general, until new state government was formed. Confederate leaders were also banned from serving in these governments. The second Reconstruction Act gave the army power to register voters in each district. Many white southerners refused to vote, while the newly registered African Americans did.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    The 14th Amendment ststed that everyone born in the United States are citizens of the United States and the state thay live in. This guaranteed that citizenship couldn't be taken away by another law. It also stated that no state could take a persons life, liberty, or property without process of law. It also excludes Confederate leaders from holding any office unless pardoned by Congress.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    This Amendment stated that the federal government could not deny the right for a male to vote because of 'race, color, or previous condidtion of servitude'. The states believed they succeeded in giving African American males the right to vote. They also thought the power of the vote coud allow African Americans to better protect themselves agsinst the white males.
