Martin Luther had a life changing experience that set him on a new course. He was caught in a horrible thunderstorm where he feared his life. Luther had cried out to St. Anne, "The patron saint of miners. Save me, St. Anne, and I'll become a monk!"
He was saved. The decision to become a monk was difficult and very disappointed in his father, he felt he keep a promise. Martin was also driven by his fears of hell and God's wrath, and he felt that life in a monastery would help him find salvation. -
The first years of monastery life was very difficult for Martin, as he didn't find the religious enlightenment he was seeking. A mentor told him to focus on his life exclusively on Christ and this would later provide him the guidance he needed.
