    The Espionage Act was a governmental doctrine during World War I that prohibited words or actions that could possibly aid the enemy or obstruct recruiting and conscripting efforts.
  • Sedition Act

    Sedition Act
    The Sedition Act was the next major governmental restriction placed on free speech during WWI. The Sedition Act prohibited people from saying anything that could possibly discourage the purhcase of war bonds or any speech that would undermine the federal government or the Constitution.
  • Schenck v. United States

    Schenck v. United States
    Schenck v. United States was a Supreme Court case that essentially upheld the United States' decision to curb the First Amendment with the Espionage and Sedition Acts. It also established the "clear and present danger" doctrine, which stated that the US has the authority to restrict free speech during times where the nation is at risk.
