  • Pearl Harbor

    On November 5th, 1941, Tojo (the prime minister of Japan) ordered the Japanese navy to prepare for an attack on the United States. Early in the morning on December 7th, Japanese dive bombers swooped over Pearl Harbor. The bomber was followed by more than 180 Japanese warplanes. In less than 2 hours, the Japanese killed 2,403 Americans.

    The main allied forced in the pacific were Americans and Australians. In this battle they succeeded in stopping the Japanese drive toward Australia. The battle lasted 5 days and during it fighting was done by airplanes that took off from huge aircraft carriers.
  • Battle of Midway

    On June 3rd, 1942 the commander of American Naval Forces Chester Nimitz’s scout planes found the Japanese fleet. Americans sent torpedo and dive bombers the next day to the attack. By the end of the battle, Japan had lost four aircraft carriers, a cruiser, and 250 planes.

    A major battle in which the Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad located in southwestern Soviet Union. It was one of the bloodiest battles in the history of warefare.
  • D-Day

    D-Day
    On this day the Allies launched an invasion of the European mainland to free Western Europe from the Nazis. The attack was originally set for June 5th, but was pushed to June 6th due to weather conditions. After midnight, three divisions parachuted down German lines. In the hours of the morning they were followed by thousands of sea born soldiers. This was the largest land-sea-air operation in army history. The allies were the victors and freed France, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
