The Japanese suffered their frist serious set back at the Battle of Coral Sea. The battle lasted for 5 days. For the first time is naval history the enemy ships never saw eachother and attacks were carried out by planes launched from aircraft carriers or ships that transport aircraft and accomodate the take offs and landings.

Allied scientists, some German and Italian refugees, conducted research, code-named the Manhattan Project which is a code name for the projects to build the first atomic bomb during WWII. Truman warns Japan to surrender; they don't.

August 6th an American plane dropped an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. the bomb flattened 4 square miles and killed more than 70,000 people. August 9th US dropped the 2nd atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing more than 40,000 people.
