    John Dewey was born October 20th, 1859, to parents Archibald Dewey and Lucina Artemisia Rich.

    In 1867 John Dewey attended Burlington public school, and then in 1874 he graduated at 15 years old.
    In 1879 he obtained his bachelor's degree at age 19 from The University of Vermont.
    Additionally, he received a doctorate in Philosophy from John Hopkins University in 1884.

    Influences

    Dewey’s educational theories and experiments were known worldwide. His philosophies and his psychological theories had a large influence in growing scientific understandings. Additionally, his publications about democratic theory and practice strongly impacted academic debates and politics. He traveled around many universities to teach his theories and write.

  • Dewey Labratory School

    The University Laboratory school was founded in November 1894 by John Dewey and University President William R. Harper and nicknamed the “Dewey School”. It was with the association of the University of Chicago that John Dewey created a space to practically apply his educational reforms in many of his published works. The Dewey School contributed considerably to the liberalization of education, the humanization of schooling, and the vitalization of teaching.
