John Dewey was born October 20, 1859 in the town of Burlington, Vermont. His parents were Archibald Dewey and Lucina Artemisia Rich.

Dewey graduates from John Hopkins University with a doctorate in in Philosophy, with his dissertation entitled 'The Psychology of Kant'. Key influencers during his scholar years were George Sylvester Morris, and G. Stanley Hall. Upon receiving his doctorate, he then went on to be an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in the same year, beginning his career as an educator.

While at the University of Chicago, Dewey would test his pedagogical theories by establishing a University Elementary School. He was able to test his theories he had formed while undergoing his study of child psychology. His theories in progressive education set the foundation for hands on learning experience seen in todays early educational programs.

Dewey is elected President of the American Psychological Association, where he served a one year term. The American Psychological Association is the largest scientific organization of psychologists in the United States, estimating around 133,000 members today.

Dewey publishes 'Democracy and Education'. This is one of Deweys greatest works, where he discusses his belief of an educational system designed around preparing students for an uncertain future. In doing so would create a society that would thrive in a setting of democracy.

After remarrying in 1946 at 87 years old, Dewey lived out the remainder of his days with the money from his book royalties and his new wife inheritance. He died of pneumonia at age 92 inside he and his wife apartment in New York City on June 1, 1952.
