Christopher graduates from college and eats with his parents. It's at this time he tells his parents that he wants to go on a summer road trip.

After his car is ruined, Christopher gathers what he needs, burns his money, and leaves the car in Lake Mead, Nevada. It's here where he first really realizes that he doesn't really want all of his stuff and can get by without it.

After abandoning his car, Christopher hitchhikes to Lake Tahoe, California. He then hikes into the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. He then continues on foot to the cascade mountains all the way through the Idaho panhandle. It is at this point he is picked up by Jan and Bob. He takes off again, ends up in Cut bank, Montana and meets Wayne Westerberg. As he's hitchhiking, he is seeing that he needs some things and can't be completely self reliant.

Ends up in California again and receives a ticket for hitchhiking. With the ticket he is seeing more and more that he can't just be out doing what he wants with no outside interference or help.

Walks from Needles, California to Topock, Arizona where he buys a canoe. Deciding to go kayaking down the river means he decided that he didn't want to follow the laws for a permit date and that he will just do what he wants.

Canoes the Colorado River traveling through several reserves and wildlife refuges. He sends Wayne Westerberg, who is in a prison in Sioux Falls, a postcard.

He goes to the Morelos Dam and crosses into Mexico. Crossing the border was another sign of disobedience after entering the river. He just went through without following the proper laws.

Trying to get to the Gulf, he realized he couldn't by himself. He met people who drove him there. This is yet another example of him seeing that complete self reliance is no good, however he doesn't learn and will continue to try to be self reliant.

Caught by US ICE trying to sneak back into the US and spends a night in prison. He did something he wasn't supposed to and then dealt with the consequences. This is how he showed what he felt to be true civil disobedience.

In LA, Chris applies for an ID and a Job, but changes his mind and takes off again. Chris nearly conforms here, but decides at some point in the night that he shouldn't and continues on his way.

Christopher buries his backpack and hitchhikes out to Las Vegas. He is constantly living this nomadic lifestyle, and is going all over the west coast.

Leaves Vegas, no one is sure where he is. He decides that the city life is not for him and that he again doesn't want to conform, so he leaves.

It is believed he's living in Coastal Oregon where he sent Jan Burres a post card.

Arrives in Bullhead City, Arizona where he works at a McDonalds and lives in an RV. Seeing that he can't be self reliant, he gets a job to make just enough to get by and starts saving for his trip.

Christopher arrives unexpectedly at Jan Burres campground in Niland, California. Here he also meets a girl. Despite the fact that he does need somebody, he turns here away in yet another attempt to be self reliant.

Meets Ron Franz while hitchhiking, and gets dropped at the San Diego waterfront. Sends Jan a postcard about living on the streets.

Sends Jan and Ron postcards from Seattle. Ends up calling Ron on march 12, a few days later, from Coachella, California. Spends the night with him on the 13 and then has him drive him to Grand Junction, California. Yet another attempt at being self reliant and fails, but still refuses to conform and continues his nomadic life.

Ends up in Carthage, South Dakota working for Wayne at his grain shop.

Working for Wayne again, he works to earn some more money for his trip.

Leaves Wayne's company for Alaska and starts hitchhiking again.

He passes through canada and takes a picture with the sign showing that it is the official start point of the alaskan highway system.

Is picked up by Jim Gallien and driven to beginning of the trail. Here he first learns how hard he will have to work to make it.

Chris finds a bus in the wilderness that he deems the magic bus. Finding the bus, he starts thinking he has a real chance to be self reliant.

Having killed a moose about a week ago, Chris discovers that maggots and other insects have gotten into the meat before he could get to it. He calls it his biggest regret ever. He starts seeing that it's not all it's cracked up to be and that self reliance might not be possible.

Chris packs up his stuff and prepares to leave. He starts the 20 mile hike out. On his way back, he discovers that the frozen river he crossed is now thawed and he can't cross it. On the 8th he arrives back to the bus. He learns that he can't make it out on his own and will likely die.

He writes a journal about having made it 100 days, but writes about how week he is. He is proud he made it so far, but is continually getting weaker and losing his ability to be self reliant and is concerned he might not be able to make it out.

Chris posts the S.O.S note and starts foraging for berries. He has learned that he can't be self reliant, but it's too late. He has noticed that all the good times he had would've been better if he didn't push everyone away.
