  • 1798 Naturalization act

    People applying for citizenship must have declared intention 5 years prior to the application. Also, they must have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years.
  • Immigration act

    Immigrants landing on the U.S. would have to pay a fifty cent tax and passengers who appeared as convicts, lunitics, idiots, or unable to take care of themselves were not permitted onto the land.
  • Wartime measure

    People coming and going had to follow the rules of the president. If someone used fake documents they would be deported and fined, anyone leaving or entering the U.S. needed to have a passport.
