Immigration Timeline

  • Chinese head tax increase.

    Chinese head tax increase.
The Chinese head tax was increased to 500$ which rasied 18 million dollars in the Canada. In the same time period, 10 million was spent on encouraging immigration from Europe. I picked this event since this made Canada a lot of money and there would be more immigration from Europe than China.
  • Order in council issued imposing a "continuous journey" rule.

Order in council issued imposing a "continuous journey" rule.
A new rule was made by the Canadian government that prohibited immigrants who did not come by continuous journey from their country of origin. Steam ships from India and Japan made a stop in Hawaii so they raised the landing tax there from 50$-200$ which earned Canada loads of money. I picked this event because this rule caused lots of people to not be able to enter Canada so there was less immigration.
  • War measure act was passed.

    War measure act was passed.
The war measure act was passed which allowed the government to detain and capture "enemy aliens" which were forced to surrender and subjected to many restrictions. Lots of "enemy aliens" were released in response to labour shortages. This rule is important because if it wasn't passed the country could have been terrorized by the Germans or the other enemies.
  • Immigrants dismissed from jobs.

    Immigrants dismissed from jobs.
At the end of the war some immigrants were released to go and offer work to soldiers. This is important because it meant that the soldiers who couldn't care for themselves and the soldiers that couldn't walk or talk right would be cared for.
  • Chinese immigration act.

    Chinese immigration act.
The act prevented all Chinese and Asian people from entering the country unless they were diplomats, students or children of Canadians and investor class. Other than the Chinese community there were no voices of opposition. The day this act came into force was the day called "Humiliation day" for Chinese. This is important in history because the government appeared to want immigration, just not Chinese people.
  • The railway agreement was signed.

    The railway agreement was signed.
The railway agreement was signed by Canadian Pacific, Canadian National Railway and the government which allowed people to immigrant from the non preffered countries like northern and central Germany. This is important since it brought people away from the Nazi's to safety.
  • Pier 21 opens.

    Pier 21 opens.
Pier 21 opened on March 8, 1928. This is important because Pier 21 was the main gateway for Canadian immigration. Pier 21 is in Halifax.
  • Germans not allowed to come into Canada and USA

Germans not allowed to come into Canada and USA
The St. Louis sailed from Germany to America with 930 German refugees but no country in America would let them land. The ship was forced to return to Germany were 3 quarters of them were killed by Nazi's. This an important event because this tells us how we can be selfish and how we were technically responsible for the death of all those people.
  • Italian immigration allowed

    Italian immigration allowed
Italians were removed from the category of "enemy aliens". This is very important because that means that Italians were now friends and not enemies.
