During the congress elections of 1854, many people from the Know nothing party were elected. They supported the idea of restricting immigration.

Homestead Act

Jun 5, 1862

The Homestead Act provided for places of residence for the poor and the immigrants. One had to move to a piece of land, live there for five years and improve it. The land was free or very cheap. It brought a whole new wave of immigrants to the United States.

Immagration Act of 1882

Oct 5, 1882

This act made immigrants pay fifty cents per person. Several groups were deemed ineligible and no lunatics were allowed into the country.

Chinese Exclusion Act

This act made it so no Chinese immigrants were allowed to enter America. It was enforced for ten years

Lady Liberty was finished and unvailed to the public.

This act applied the literar requirement to immigrate ti the United States.

This act was registered as the Green Card Legislation.

McCarran-Walter Act

Jun 18, 1952

This created a preference system for immigrants. It gave the priority to those with family members already in America and to those with specific skill, such as scientists.

Immigration and Nationallity Act of 1965

This act created ned restrictions for individuals immigrating from Mexico.

Immigration and Reform Control Act

Apr 25, 1986

The act made it illegal to hire the indivuals who are considered to be illegal aliens in the United States.

Illegal Immmigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act

Aug 27, 1996

The act named aboved was created to strengthen border enforcement. In addition, it was stated that if an individual that was not a citizen then they would not get any benefits from the United States Government.

U.S.A. PATRIOT Act

Oct 26, 2001

Due to 9/11, restrictions were added on immigration from everywhere. It created a Department of Homeland Security and increased border control. It also made it a requirement to have one's passport machine readable.

Real ID Act

Mar 10, 2005

This requires standardized ID cards or state driver's licenses for citizen identification.

Arizona Immigration Law

This criminalizes being and illegal alien in Arizona, and makes it so the Arizona police force is responsible for enforcing this law.
