    During the congress elections of 1854, many people from the Know nothing party were elected. They supported the idea of restricting immigration.

    The Homestead Act provided for places of residence for the poor and the immigrants. One had to move to a piece of land, live there for five years and improve it. The land was free or very cheap. It brought a whole new wave of immigrants to the United States.
