    Operation Safeguard
    In fall 1994 the Border Patrol announced Operation Safeguard for the Tucson Border Patrol sector, which covers nearly the entire desert-dominated Arizona-Mexico border. Operation was designed to "redirect illegal crossings away from urban areas near the Nogales port of entry to open areas that the Border Patrol can easily control"
  • Chandler, AZ / Immigration Sweep

    Chandler, AZ / Immigration Sweep
    Chandler police and federal agents spend five days rounding up suspected illegal immigrants in downtown neighborhoods. They make 340 arrests, taking some legal residents into custody. City officials later pay $500,000 in legal settlements and spend years apologizing. Also referred to as "Operation Restoration", and resulted in lawsuits and scars in the Chandler community.

    Propostion 203 (English Immersion Bill)
    Voters endorse a requirement for English immersion in schools, banning bilingual education. It passes 63 percent to 37 percent. Many claim there have been inumerable benefits but lead to mistreatment of bilingual children.
  • "No Public Benefits" Under Prop. 200

    "No Public Benefits" Under Prop. 200
    Voters approve Proposition 200, which denies public benefits to people not in the country legally. The measure passes 56 percent to 44 percent. Also known as 'Protect Arizona Now' requires proof of U.S. Citizenship for many public benefits including voting.

    MinuteMan Project Picks Up...
    Volunteers from around the county -- part of a civilian-based effort known as the "Minuteman Project" -- descend on Cochise County for a month to "assist" the U.S. Border Patrol in its search for undocumented immigrants. Brings national attention to Immigration crisis, and causes discrimination of many in workplace, and fear of those immigrants in the country illegally.

    State of Emergency on Mexican Border
    Gov. Napolitano declared a state of emergency along Arizona's border with Mexico, a move that allowed her to free up $1.5 million in disaster funds to combat illegal immigration and smuggling. Napolitano criticized government for "moving slow" on border security (rapidly evolved into a controversial election-year issue across the country).

    Immigration Protest (Phoenix, AZ)
    An estimated 20,000 Latinos march up and down 24th street in Phoenix to protest federal legislation that would criminalize undocumented immigrants. The rally, which snarled traffic and shut down businesses, spurs an almost immediate backlash from some Arizona residents who angered by the sight of marchers in the streets waving Mexican flags.

    Immigrants At A Loss
    Voters endorse a trio of ballot measures related to illegal immigration, including requiring out-of-state college tuition from Arizona residents who can't prove citizenship and denying bail to illegal immigrants charged with a crime. They also approve a measure that makes English the state's official language. All four ballot measures pass with 70 percent-plus of vote.
