  • Statue of Liberty is complete.

    The Statue of Liberty is completed and unvailed to the public.
  • Ellis island.

    In 1892, to mark the Federal government's control of immigration affairs (some States had previously taken matters into their own hands), Ellis Island in Upper New York Bay became the main entry point to the US for emigrants who had left their home countries. Over the the next 62 years, until its closure in 1954, Ellis Island processed some 12 million immigrants (according to the US Bureau of Immigration). Ellis Island has been turned into a wonderful museum of immigration.

  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    From 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act prohibited Chinese immigration to the USA. The act was initially intended to last for 10 years, but was renewed in 1892 and made permanent in 1902. It was finally repealed in 1943.
  • Immigration Act of 1917.

    In response to the massive wave of immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe, Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1917 which required that immigrants be able to read and write in their native languages.
  • Emergency Quota Act

  • Immigration Act of 1924 and National Origins Act of 1929

    Established a new quota system for each nationality and set a limit on the total number of immigrants to be allowed entry at all (150000 per year). The quota system that resulted from these acts served as teh basis for U.S. immigration policy for more than thirty-five years.

    The Alien Registration Act of 1940 requires that all immigrants in the United States over 14 years of age be registered and fingerprinted.

    The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 legally allowed immigration to the United States from Southern and Eastern Europe. It was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson at a ceremony on Libery Island.
