Pilgrims came from England seeking religious freedom -
Peoples begin to migrate to America for economic opportunity
Americas rich resources were now exposed, many Europeans and Asians came to America seeking economic opportunity, bringing with them thousands of slaves as well. -
Mexican American War
45% of previously Mexican territory was now U.S. territory. -
First U.S.- Mexico Railroad Built
Thousands of undocumented workers from Mexico came to the U.S. in building the Railroad because of work opportunity/demand. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
First Federal law restricting immigration- due to competition from Chinese during the Gold Rush for jobs, etc. Chinese laborers were forbidden from coming to the United States. -
Mexican Revolution
This war encouraged Mexican workers to come to the U.S./AZ because of the weak economy in Mexico. -
Immigration Act of 1924
Act passed by Federal Government requiring that only 2% of each nationality could enter the U.S. each year. -
Start of the Great Depression
America was in complete economic disarray. Americans wanted no job competition from immigrants. -
Start of WW II
America became a war machine putting America to work and bringing them out of the depression. Many new jobs were created and more immigrants came to fill them. -
Operation Wet Back
over 1 million illiegal immigrants were deported back to Mexico -
immigration & Nationality Act of 1965
Immigration Act of 1924 is replace. No more nationality based restrictions. Citizens could sponsor relatives from country of origin in United States. -
Immigration Reform and Control Act
over 3 million illegal immigrants are granted amnesty -
Supreme Court Ruling on SB 1070
Supreme court struck down 3 o the 4 provisions of the bill -
NAFTA is created
North American Free Trade Agreement- brought 13 million new undocumented workers to the U.S. -
SB 1070 is passed by AZ legislature
Bill requires that law officials can require to see immigration papers from any "suspicious" individual.
