  • Background information

During the 1800s many immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe came to the United States for jobs, to escape from military service, and to avoid religious persecution. The voyage to the US was about two weeks if one traveled in steerage. From there all immigrants would land on either Ellis Island or Angel Island. Here all immigratns would be inspected for disease or health problems. Lots of immigrants would be sent back home due to illness.

Asian immigrants came to the US and mostly settled in the west coast. They were disliked by many Americans. Asians were constantly accused of over populating areas, stealing jobs, and making more money off their own businesses. To stop the contradiction the Chinese exclusion act was created. The act banned the chinese for 10 years and took away the American citizenships for those already here.

    Dear diary,
Every morning I remind myself how blessed I am to have made it to America. I no longer have to be afraid of being killed because I am jewish. But, yet I still fell misreable. The landlord has moved my five siblings, parents, and I into the narrow corner bedroom down the hall. I can no longer sleep becasue our neighbor is very ill. This is not good, for I have to wake up early to go to work and make some money. My job is at a taylor store. I work seven days a week for 15 hours a day.
