    Chinese and Japenese immagrants camre to the West Coast between 1851 and 1883. About 300,000 Chinese arrived during this time. In 1907, 30,000 Japenese arrived and settled. By 1920 more than 200,000 Japenesse lived in the West Coast. Where they arrived became known as Angel Island where asian immagrants were held and inspected before entering the U.S
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    Chinese Exclusion Act
    his act was created in 1882 to ban Chinese immigrants from coming into the u.s unless they were merchants, students, teachers, tourists, or government officials. Congress stopped Chinese immigrations for 10 years. It was until 1902 that Chinese immigration was restricted indefinitely, later in 1943 it was repealed. The signifcance of this is that in the U,S there was suppose to be free immigration yet Chinese immigrants were restricted.

    The Pendleton Civil Service Act was a law enacted to establish a bipartisan a civil service commission. It was to make appointments for government jobs by means of the merit system. It was based on the persons peformance through an exampination process. Most jobs were labeled as cilvil service positions. The Pendleton Civil Service Act had made the public administration become more honest and efficient.

    The Social Gospel movement was a reform program that helped preach salvation through service to the poor. In the late 1800s, reformers established settlement houses which were community centers that helped people, especially immigrants.These settlement houses provided education, cultural and social services, and medical treatment. Settlement houses werre being established across the nation.This movement was a significant event because it helped the poor immigrants and it was run by women,

    During 1892 to 1924 almost 17 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. Most of the mimmigrants that came through Ellis Island were mostly from Europe. Through passing Ellis Island they had to undergo a long process where they were inspected and take a physical examination
  • Gentlemen's Agreement

    Gentlemen's Agreement
    Segregation of the Japenese had got the Japanese mad which had led to the Gentlemens agreement where Theodore Roosevelt made a deal with Japan's Government. The agreement was to limit Japans emigration of unskilled workers in exchange for San Francisco's segregation order to be abolished.

    Americanization Movement
    The Americaniztion Movement was a social campaign used too group together everyone of different cultures. They made sure they assimilated a variety of cultures into the dominant culture. They used schools and programs to teach immigrants skills (such as cooking, social ettiquitte etc.) they needed for citizenship. But most immigrants did not want to forget there old culture traditions so ethnic communities were created to practice there customs and religions.
