    Harriet Tubman was a huge part of the Underground Railroad during the time of black Slaves, died in New York in 1913.

    This agreement was to reduce the number of male Japanese immigrants to a maximum of 150 ever year.
  • Chinese Immigration Act

    This Act essentially banned the entry of virtually all Chinese immigrants for about 24 years.
  • Pier 21 Opens

    Pier 21 opened in Halifax, NS. It was the point of entry for about one million immigrants into Canada.
  • Protest against Deportation of Japanese Canadians

    The government attempted to deport 10,000 Japanese Canadians to Japan but they were stopped by a massive public protest. Unfortunately 4,00 Japanese Canadians were deported to Japan.
  • War Brides arrive from England

    The ship Mauritania docked in Halifax and it was carrying 943 war brides and children from England.
  • Hungarian Uprising

    Thousands of students took to the streets in Hungary Demanding free speech and free elections. Around 37,000 Hungarian refugees ended up fleeing to Canada.
  • Hungarian Refugees Arrive in Vancouver

    The first Hungarian refugees, fleeing their country from the Soviet troops, arrived in Vancouver.
  • Immigration "Points System"

    The point system was a way to determine whether you were eligible to emigrate to Canada or not.
  • West Indian Immigration

    Following the Immigration Act of 1962 and 1967, about 64,000 West Indians came to Canada.
  • Pier 21 Closes

    Forty-three years after it opened, Pier 21 was closed. About 1 million immigrants come to Canada through Pier 21 between 1928 and 1971.

    Canada made a new Immigration Act that stated that refugees would no longer be admitted to Canada as and exception to immigration regulations.

    Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave an apology to the Chinese community for the wrong doings that the head tax may of had on their lives.
