Imam Ali un Naqi (a.s.) became an Imam at the age of 8 years. The khalifa wrote to the governor of Medina asking him to send the young Imam to a person called Junaydi for tutorage (the governor of Madina was threatened that if he did not do this than the people of Madina would be annihilated). Junaydi was a well known poet of that time and 'anti - Ahlulbayt' and was 80 years old. The Khalifa felt that if this was done than anything that the Imam did or said could be attributed to Junaydi i.e. it

On the way to samarra mutawakkil ordered imam hadi to stay in a dirty run down inn. A shi'ah came to visit the imam. he creid when he saw the inn the imam told him hot to cry and told him to look at his surroundings again when the shi'ah saw the imam was in a beautiful garden with beautiful maids beside him and a river flowing beside him.

A lady claimed that she was Zainab the daughter of Hazrate Fatima (sa). He said, “Many long years have passed since that period when Zainab lived and you are quite young.”
She replied:
“Yes, but the Prophet (saw) drew his hand upon my head and prayed for me to remain young for ever.
As such, after every forty years I turn back to become young.”
Mutawakkil called upon all the wise men to visit him and enquired from them:
“What you say about the claim of this woman?“

“I know that she is lying, but what proof and logic do you have to condemn her.”
They said:
“We do not know, Imam Hadi (A.S.) should solve this problem.”
Mutawakkil at once summoned Imam (A.S.) and told him about that matter.
Imam (A.S.) said:
“Send her to the cage of the lions, if she is telling the truth, because the beasts do not molest the children of Fatima (S.A.) and do not eat their flesh.”
Mutawakkil said to the woman: “what do you say.

She said:“This man wishes that I may be killed. If he is right then let him do it himself.”
Mutawakkil said:
“She is right, you must do it first yourself.”
Imam (A.S.) replied:
“There is no hurdle to it!”
He went to the lions in the cage and sat among them. All observed with amazement, that the lions sat very respectfully before the Imam (A.S.) and sometimes caressed themselves against his body and he caressed their bodies with his hand, affectionately.When Imam (A.S.) ordered that they might go

Then Imam (A.S.) came out of the cage and went to Mutawakkil and said:
“Oh woman now it is your turn.”
The woman started crying and begging saying:
“I told a lie, I am the daughter of such and such man, and wanted to play a trick and a hoax but it did not work.”

He ordered that all those wanting to visit Kerbala would have their fingers cut off, then hand and feet cut then only be able to go if one other from the family was killed. Imam still asked Shias to visit Kerbala. When Mutawakkil saw that all had failed and it did not discourage the visits than he banned all visits to Kerbala completely.

Mutawakkil is also the one who ordered the desecration of the grave of Imam Husayn (a.s.) wanting to remove Imam's body and burn it (He did not succeed). He tried running water over the grave so no traces of the grave would remain but was unsuccessful.

on the day of eid al fiter mutawakkil had for 15 years and it had been 13 years scince imam al hadi was brought from madina so mutawakkil had decided to hold the salat al eid will be held in a place that waws 8 kms outside samarra and orderd everyone to walk while he was on a horse. one of the caliph's men tried to make up an excuse for mutawakkil and said to the imam the caliph does not wish to cause you trouble. the imam told him to go away. the imam recited an ayah of the quran.

mutawakkil's son Muntasir was ruler he was very kind to imam hadi and the alhul bayt. he lifted the restrictons of not able to go to karbala. he even gave back the land of bibi fatima az zehara. the whole muslim world felt reviled when muntazir came to power. but he only survived 6 months before he was murderd. muntasir was only 25 when he was murderd.

They called upon Imam Hadi (as) and with one very simple remedy he instantly cured Mutawakkil!
