Born on Feb 18 1936 and grew up in Vancouver British Coloumbia.

Obtained his BA Masters in mathematics and Physics in 1960S at the University of British Columbia. Then he went on and obtained a Ba, MA, and PHD in Moral Science at Cambridge University

Ian returned to Canada in 1982 after teaching Philosophy in multiple colleges over the years, These Colleges were Cambridge Oxford, Princeton, and Stanford, and became part of the University of Toronto, where he was able to travel and lecture.

Two exceptional awards were in 2000 with a permanent chair at the College de France and the Molson Prize and the Killam Prize for the Humanities in 2002
