Soon the telephone spread to many parts of the world. In Sweden Lars Magnus Ericsson invented a telephone that was hung on the wall. It had to be very nice looking becuase it was like an art piece in the home.

The earliest phone were called candlestick phones because one piece was to listen with and the other was used to speak in. The parts were like tubes, or candles.

In the 1930´s the candlestick phones became oldfashioned. Phones became more modern when the listening piece and the talking piece were combined in one. Another important thing ws the rotary dial used to dial the numbers.

In the 1940´s Motorola designed the first portable phones. It was the United States military that invented a phone that was very heavy, nearly 40 pounds.

For many years people tried to combine the phone into one single piece. In the 1950´s one of the world´s most popular one piece models was invented by Ralph Lysell of the Ericsson phone company in Sweden.

In 1963 AT&T in the United States invented a breakthrough. Instead of the rotary dial they created a phone where you pushed the buttons to dial the phone number.

In the 1980´s the phone became cordless. Instead of being attached to a cable, the phone could be carried around while you were speaking. Signals were sent by an antenna on the phone.

In the 1990´s caller ID became standard in most phones. It was used both in regular phones as well as for the earliest mobile phones.

From the early mobile phones in the 1990´s to today´s smart phones the eveolution has been incredibly fast. Today new models appear every year. Mobile phones have cameras, e-mail, internet, apps and you can take the technology anywhere you go.
