History of the events and battles of the American Civil War 1861-1865

  • The attack on Fort Sumter

    Mr. Abe Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter and the Confederates found out and decided to attack Fort Sumter before the supplies arrived. When the supplies finally arrive, the ship saw the battle and went back.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    The Union troops were marching to take a important railroad junction at Manassas, Virginia and Confederate troops intercepted. More Confederate troops arrived for support winning this battle after a comeback. Also there were many spectator's for this battle for entertainment.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This battle was the the battle with most causalities in a single day than out of the whole war.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This document allowed the Union to capture slaves and free them from slavery and African Americans can no fight in the Civil War.
  • Formation of the 54. Mass.

    This military division was made up of only African Americans and lead by white officers. This regiment has over 600 troops and is hated by whites but this regiments learned faster and is smarter than whites.
  • The Battle of Gettysburg

    The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in the Civil War over a few days. The Union won and this was a turning point in the Civil War. This battle was held at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
  • Defeat of Vicksburg

    This battle was the a battle right after the Battle of Gettysburg. Grant here had defeated defeated the Confederates. By winning this battle, the US gained control of the Mississippi River. Grant originally went for direct attacks then he just sieges the place. This battle lasted for a month and a half.
  • New York City Draft Riots

    The North made a draft for all people 18 or older to be a soldier with some exceptions. People rioted over this and destroyed buildings with people of wealth and killed anyone who tried to get in there way. The police couldn't stop them so the government sent troops who survived Gettysburg and ordered them to fire killing some of the people who were rioting.
  • Gettysburg Adress

    The Gettysburg Address was a speech that lasted 2 minutes from Lincoln describing how the victory of the battle of Gettysburg helped the Union.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    General Sherman went from Atlanta to the sea looting and burning towns, tearing up railroads, and destroying crops in a strategy called Total War. This path he followed was 60 miles wide and 300 miles long.
  • Creation of Freedmen's Bureau

    The Freedmen's Bureau was a program that helped former slaves and educated them. This place was hard to actually go to since former slaves might still be working for their old masters through lies.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    This is where the South surrendered in someones front living room at the city of Appomattox Courthouse starting at the person's front lawn.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    John Booth was an actor part of a group who wants the South to rule again and he killed Lincoln while he was watching a play and Lincoln's bodyguard was across the street drinking. This was part of a plan to kill 3 heads of the government in which one guy chickened out and the other guy stab the guy he was supposed to kill but he didn't die.
  • Congress Passes the 13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment abolished slavery for every state and after the War, if the South were to come back, they had to ratify the Amendment. The Amendment also had a loop hole where free labor was allowed when a person was incarcerated.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th Amendment made it so that all people born in the US are citizens and would all have equal protection by the law.
  • 15th Amendment

    The 15th Amendment let all citizens vote no matter what since the South would make tests so that African American's so that they couldn't vote. The 15th Amendment said that Citizens can't be stopped from voting on account of race or color.
  • End of Reconstruction

    In 18766, Hayes was president and withdrew all troops from the South. He ended Reconstruction and the fight for equality.
  • Supreme Court Case Plessy vs. Ferguson

    The court case was about Jim Crow Laws and how they broke the 14th Amendment but the Court ruled that the Jim Crow Laws were fair and the KKK would stay. The Court thought they were separate but equal.
