  • Asbestos Mining in Libby

    Asbestos dust from vermiculite mines killed hundreds of residents and sicken thousands of people. Vermiculite was used in insulation for homes and buildings. The mines started in 1919 and were shut down in 1990.

  • The Dust Bowl

    A changed in agricultural factors and policies caused a drought in the south plains regions in the US. This region suffered severe dust storms which killed crops and worsen the effects of the Great Depression in the south.
  • Founding of the ICUN

    The ICUN was established on October 5, 1948. The organization brought together countries to protect nature and provide knowledge and tools to teach conservation.
  • The Great Smog

    A high-pressure weather system and industrial pollution interfered with London’s temperature causing a layer of warm air to trap the colder lower air at the ground level. The smog was made from acrid sulfur particles and caused people to abandon their cars and others to be hospitalized.

    A large petrochemical plant dumped large amounts of mercury into the waterways of the fishing town Minamata. Fish from the bay were poisoned which caused the townspeople to get sick and give future generations birth defects.

  • Aral Sea Crisis

    The Aral Sea shrunk in size due to the evaporation of its water. Water sources were diverted from the sea to create the irrigation system that helped grow the cotton industry. This caused people to leave their homes and make fragile villages and communities.

    The Silent Spring discusses the negative effect humans have on the world. It mainly talks about how bad pesticides are for the environment and bashes the industry for spreading misinformation to the public.

    The Gaia Hypothesis states that Earths is maintained in a habitable state by self-regulating feedback mechanisms involving organisms tightly coupled to their environment.

  • Whaling (Save the Whale)

    Greenpeace launched its first anti-whaling campaign in Vancouver. The “Save the Whales” movement started and helped the international ban on commercial whaling.
  • Love Canal

    Love Canal near Niagara Falls was built directly adjacent to a new neighborhood named after the canal. Hooker Chemical Company used the canal to dump toxic chemical waste. The caused the public to experience illnesses, birth defects, and asthma.
  • Bhopal

    The Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, released over 30 tons of methyl isocyanate and multiple other toxic gases. More than 600,000 people were exposed which caused victims throats and eyes to burn. This disaster included many deaths.
  • Chernobyl

    Due to human error, a steam explosion on the night released at least 5% if the radioactive reactor core into the environment. 350,000 people were evacuated and still to this day Chernobyl is unhabitable for humans due to the high levels of radiation.

  • Baia Mare Gold Mine Cyanide Spill

    A dam located in Northwestern Romania opened and released 100,000 cubic meters of wastewater that contained large amounts of cyanide. There was extensive damage to the ecosystem and plants and created undrinkable water for humans.
