    Shark finning is when humans cut off a shark’s fin and throw the rest of the shark back into the ocean to drown and die. Unfortunately, this has become a rising issue and the fins are used in a soup that shows the status of Chinese culture. About 100 million sharks are killed globally each year due to this which could send many species into extinction and affect the food chain.

    Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone

    The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is a zone in the ocean where pollutants (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) have gotten into the water and algae blooms have taken oxygen out of the water, so therefore marine life cannot survive. These pollutants get in because of the Mississippi River.

    In London 1952 a extreme cold snap occurred. People lit their coal fireplaces and it caused a extraordinary Smog over london. This caused a huge environmental uprise and the clean air act of 1956 was created.

    In May 1956 Minamata disease was discovered in Minamata Japan. A chemical factory was pumping wastewater into Minamata Bay which contained mercury. The fish and shellfish absorbed the mercury and then was transferred to the people in the nearby area.

    In 1960 the soviets began irrigating the lake for source water. It has shrunk 90% and ships lay on the bottom of the lake. The dried lake now produced deadly sandstorms and negatively affects the wild life around the lake

    Between 1961-1975 a chemical called agent orange was sprayed over Vietnam to clear vegetation so the US could fight the enemy Vietcong better. Agent orange caused extensive health problems to humans and the wild life
  • Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring Published

    • Summary description: In June 30, 1962 Rachel Carson Published Silent Spring. Silent Spring is about the use of DDT and how its damaged ecosystems. Critics didn’t like it and called it a fable. It inspired the modern environmental movement.
  • Gaia Hypothesis

    Gaia hypothesis was made by James Lovelock. He essentially proposed that all organisms and the inorganic surroundings form a self-regulating system which can help conditions necessary for life. Think of it all as one system. This is highly argued to this day.

  • Love canal

    • In 1978 a town called love canal sat on top of 21,000 tons of toxic waste. The problem was inevitable and people had to leave the town. It led to the creation of the 1980 superfund program to clean up toxic sites

    In December 3,1984 Methylisocyanate gas sprayed out of the Union Carbide in Bhopal, India. Approximately 5,200 people died and thousands of others were injured. It is considered the worst industrial disaster in the world.

    Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine where a reactor design and not properly trained plant operators were at fault for the explosion that killed many and gave Acute Radiation Syndrome and Thyroid Cancer to many who were exposed to the high radiation levels. Since this many safety regulations have been put into place to prevent things like this from happening again and they have since fixed the type of reactor that caused the incident.

    In the 1991 Gulf war Saddam Hussein ordered his men to set oil wells on fire. He knew that he wasn’t going to win the war and set them on fire so no one can use the oil for wealth. The smoke was extremely dense that it was seen from space and it caused black rain.

    Kyoto protocol failure was a legally binding treat that was never ratified. It was going to be used to enforce developed countries to reduce emissions by 5% and reports stated that success was not promised and it would not help much.

    Former VP Al Gore discusses his personal and political experiences with the science behind global warming. His film has been able to inspire many and educate many others especially at schools. Some scientists say that some of his projections were exaggerated though.
  • Deep Water Horizon

    This was the largest marine oil spill; this was due to an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. Natural gas exploded and then went into the riser then to platform where it was lit and caught on fire killing 11 workers and injuring 17. The oil rig then sank, and large amounts of oil discharged into Gulf of Mexico, this put many businesses out and huge lawsuits were made.

  • Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster

    This was the second worst nuclear disaster in the history of nuclear power generation, during this only 3 reactors were operational, so when the earthquake hit and tsunami waves came, they damaged the backup generators. 3 explosions occurred and thousands of residents left due to fear of nuclear radiation or even death
  • Piney Point Phosphate Leak

    In March of 2021, a leak was discovered on the liner of the Piney Point reservoir where millions of gallons of polluted water from the mining of phosphate was. Although it was not radioactive it released harmful chemicals into our ecosystem and has killed many marine lives and could make many sick due to red tide. This is extremely harmful for nature and our economy as there are many restaurants who are hurting because of this.
