History of the Atomic Model

  • 5 BCE

    Democritus

    Democritus
Democritus proposed the existence of Atoms. Unfortunately his theory couldn't be tested due to the lack of equipment and limited technology at the time.
  • Dalton

    Dalton
Dalton developed the theory of atoms and matter. He was able to make accurate evidence using experiments in chemistry, Dalton's measurements allowed him to support his hypothesis and prove his theory.
  • JJ Thomson

    JJ Thomson
JJ Thomson discovered the electron and performed his experiment using electric charges in cathode ray tubes.
  • Rutherford

    Rutherford
Rutherford developed the planetary model of an atom, he performed his experiment using alpha particles fired at piece of thin gold foil. He used an early prototype called a "Geiger Counter" to measure his results.
  • Bohr

    Bohr
Bohr developed the model of the atom using mathematical models and laws of quantum physics, he proposed his updated model of the atom.
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick
James Chadwick discovered the neutron by experimenting using kinematics and accurate measurements. This lead him to prove the existence of a previously undetected subatomic particle, now called a neutron.
