    First school of special education was the American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Dead and Dumb in Hartford, Ct. A total of seven students were enrolled in the first year. Back then, special needs individuals were defined as dumb. The school provided instructions for math, reading, writing, geography, history, and the bible.
