History of Space Exploration

  • Soviets launch Sputnik into space and make America speed up the space program

On Oct 4th, 1957, The Soviet Union launches Satalite Sputnik into orbit, and makes the United States react by speeding up their space program, and helped lead up to the Apollo missions.
  • Jan 31, 1958, USA launches Explorer into space

On Jan 31, 1958, The United States of America launched Explorer 1 into space, helping the United States get into the space race,
  • May 25, 1961, President John F Kennedy announces his plan to send a man to the moon

On May 25th, 1961, President John F Kennedy announced his plan to send a man to land on the moon and return safly to Earth, making the USA win the space race., and helping NASA learn more about the moon.
  • Feb 12, 1962, Friendship 7 orbits Earth 3 times.

On Feb 12, 1962, The Friendship 7 orbits Earth 3 times holding John Glenn, helping the United States further learn about how long a man can stay in space, helping them learn more and helping their progress in The Space Race.
  • 20 July, 1969, Man lands on moon.

On July 20th, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon carring Niel Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Armstrong out of the spacecraft onto the Moon's surfice. This was very important because it's the main reason America won the Space Race and it later helped by us sending more people to the moon and space probes to other planets.
  • 30 June, 2004, Cassini arrives at Saturn

On June 30th, 2004, Cassini entered Saturn. This made a huge impact on Space Exploration by helping us study planets farther than Mars. It also lead up to us learning that human life could be possible on 2 of Saturn's moons.
  • 5 Jan 2005, Cassini shows Titan's Earth-Like surfice and atmosphere.

On Jan 5th, 2005, Cassini sends back info from Saturn's moon Titan to show it has an Earth-Like surfice and atmosphere. This discovery shows that if something ever happened to Earth, this would be a good alternative place to live.
  • 22 Jul, 2006, Cassini shows lakes on Titan.

On July 22nd, 2006, Cassini shows lakes on Titan's surface. This was important because it was on of the main goals of the Cassini Equinox Mission.
  • 15 Sep, 2006, Cassini finds previously unknown faint Saturn rings.

On Sep 15th, 2006, Cassini showed some of Saturn's previously unkown faint rings. This showed that some things in space we haven't discovered, and may show that we may not know a lot about space, and could lead to re-exploration of the planets.
  • 13 Feb, 2010, Cassini passes over Mimas and shows Pac-Man shaped thermal pattern.

On Feb 13th, 2010, Cassini does the closest pass over Mimas and shows it has a Pac-Man shaped thermal pattern. This is important to Space Exploration by showing thermal patterns of moons and planets and it helped our understanding of Mimas.
