history of reading

  • Parents reading to me

My parents or siblings would read to me when I was younger. I was the youngest of 4 kids, so they had to entertain me.
  • Kindergarten

I loved my kinder teacher. I remember starting to learn letters, sounds, and reading out loud to us. She made reading activities fun. One of my memories was that she would make many poems into songs that we would learn to read.
  • 2nd grade

In 2nd grade is when I can start to remember reading for fun. Knowing and understanding what I was reading.
  • 3rd grade reading

When I was in third grade my favorite books were Boxcart Children and Babysitters club. The Boxcar children made me want to always read more. The books always kept me guessing, which helped me to start making opinons and making predictions.
  • 4th grade

In fourth grade we had what was called the great American challenge. I had to do many things to pass it off. Two of things I had to do was memorize the capitals and states and part of the Gettysburg address. With this came understanding what I was reading. I had to stop and re-read for understanding and meaning
  • 6th grade-8th grade

This was the start of many reports and vocabulary tests.
  • College

Some of my classes I have had to read chapter books. Most recently last fall I took a literacy class and read four different books. I made sticky notes while I read, and did a lot of stop and think.
  • high school

As far as reading goes with high school most of my reading was highlighting in textbooks and taking notes. Also listening to my teachers give lectures and take notes. I may have not been reading at this time but when taking notes I had learn to take notes properly so I could read and understand them later.
  • Work

For the last 12 years I have worked for the school district. Mostly in either resource or autism programs. One of the schools I worked at last year implemented the daily 5 program. This involved pre read, during read, and after reading. Its a great program , that I was ale to observe students use. Since the students rotate through out different centers, students don't get bored.
  • My Own Children

I now get the pleasure to help my own children with reading and making sure they enjoy it. We work on sight words, comprehension , doing a lot of stop and think. Reading out loud has also helped my oldest with slowing down and understanding what she reads. She also likes to make sticky notes through out her reading. Of course I still read to my own kids at night. I feel this is very important to still do this. Or my oldest likes to read her chapter books to me
