Vaudeville theaters become Nickelodeons

Vaudeville theaters added music and film to their usual shows in 1900. This marked the transition to Nickelodeons

First narrative film released

Dec 1, 1903

On December 1st, 1903, the first narrative silent film was released. The movie was "the Great Train Robbery". It was 12 minutes, an epic compared to 30-60 second movies at the time.

Nickelodeon theater opens

The Nickelodeon theater opened in 1905. Nickelodeons included films, vaudeville shows, and music.

MPPC founded

Dec 9, 1908

Thomas Edison's film company was founded in 1908. This was the first step to him creating a monopoly. They discouraged the creation of independent films and did anything to keep power.

First movie with dialogue released

Oct 9, 1927

In late 1927, Warner released the first movie with dialogue. That movie was "The Jazz Singer". The movie also included singing, another first for film
