  • First Motion Picture

    A bet was made causing this. Eadweard Muybridge sucessfully captured motion images of a horse galloping. This was done by placing 12 cameras.
  • First paper film was developed

    Paper film was created in 1885 by George Eastman. Early film was difficult to use and required complex machinery. Nowadays film is synthetic instead of paper.
  • Cinématographe

    The Lumière brothers built a lightweight, hand-held motion picture camera. It was called the Cinématographe. They discovered that their machine could also be used to project images onto a large screen.
  • First Movie Theater

    Harry Davis & John P. started the first ever movie theater. It was in Pittsburgh, Penn and was called the Nickelodeon. The popular TV channel was named after it.
  • Credits

    Credits begin to appear at the beginning of motion pictures. Before, credits were not given. This was a way to make sure actors did not become famous and demand better pay.
  • Spoken Dialogue

    Warner Bros.’s 'The Jazz Singer', presents the movie’s first spoken words. Before most words used were simply musical numbers. Actors back then would only sing in movies.
  • First Cartoon

    The first cartoon with synchronized sound, was Disney's 'Steamboat Willie'. This was the first Mickey Mouse film released. Cartoons after this release experience a golden age in production.
  • Awards Ceremonies

    The Academy Awards were created. They gave out film awards for things like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor/Actress, etc. The film, Wings, won best picture that year.
  • Colored Films

    Films like The Wizard of Oz & Gone with the Wind came out. Afterwards, colored films finally started getting popular. Unlike most films from their time, these were not in black & white, but were instead colorful & vibrant.
  • Hollywood film success

    Edison's film monopoly lead many film makers to break away from New York. They moved far to Hollywood so that Edisons men could not stop them. Movies in the 1940s would continue to grow Hollywood's success.
  • First Popular 3D Movie

    The movie House of Wax becomes the first 3D movie in color. Earlier attempts were made but were not very successful, such as the first 3D movie of all time, Power of Love. It came out in 1922.
  • Motion Picture Rating System

    Movies began having a rating system. The system allowed viewers to know how mature the movie they're watching is. It also restricts people of certain ages from watch movies of certain ratings. It included G, PG, R and X. PG-13 came later.
