  • First Camera

    The Camera Obscura was created. You could project images on real life into a screen on the camera. Then it had to be traced into a piece of paper to create the image.
  • The Horse in Motion

    The Horse in Motion
    This was the first film ever made. Eadweard Muybridge made a $25,000 bet on of horses could have all four legs off the ground at the same time while running. He lined up cameras so that they would take photos one after the other following the horse. The photos could be compiled together to make the film.
  • Paper Film

    Paper Film
    Paper film was invented to make it so that you didn't have to draw out the images. The film was made out of plastic because nothing else was as flexible and clear but it couldn't be as clear as something like glass. When it was exposed to light, they would chemically change and lighten up some areas to create an image.
  • Projectors

    The Lumiere Brothers invented the first projector. They used it mainly in small cafes. The films were only 30 seconds to a minute long.
  • First Narrative Movie

    The Great Train Robbery was created by Edwin Porter. It had a whopping 12 minutes in duration and 14 scenes in total. He also worked for Thomas Edison.
  • MPPC Founded

    MPPC Founded
    The Motion Picture Patents Company was planning on monopolizing the film market. Indie film makers couldn't make money off of the films they produced. Instead you had to pay to make movies. All the indie film makers fled to California to get away from the MPPC in New York and establish Hollywood.
  • The Peak of Nickelodeons

    The Peak of Nickelodeons
    Nickelodeons were small store front theaters. They had an organist playing in the front since there was no sound in films yet. They also had a couple of live performances to accompany the films.
  • Talkies

    Talkies
    Talkies were films with sound. Many thought that it was going to be a failure. However, by the 1940s they ceased to produce silent movies altogether.
  • The Wizard of Oz

    The Wizard of Oz
    It was the first successful american film to incorporate color. Many thought that it wouldn't be successful and that it was too much of a change. However, over time, more and more films start to use color.
  • Jaws Releases

    Jaws Releases
    Jaws was the mark of the beginning of the blockbuster era. Blockbusters are movies that are extremely popular and make a lot of money. The following summer blockbusters include Alien, Star Wars, and many more.

    CGI
    CGI stands for Computer Generated Images. CGI comes into play when something fictional is to expensive or too unrealistic to make into a prop. Examples of it are used in Toy Story, Jurassic Park, and Avatar.
  • The Switch to Digital

    The Switch to Digital
    Digitally stored films are much more convenient. There isn't any physical storage and it's in a smaller size. But, the quality can never live up to regular film cameras.
