  • Eadweard Muybridge

    Easweard Muybridge was the man responsible for making the first ever motion picture. He did this after making a bet with his friends that when a horse runs at full speed all of its legs are off the ground. To prove his point, he layed 12 cameras in a line to capture pictures of the horse as it ran by. Muybridge saw that is the looked through all the pictures it creates the effect of a moving image.
  • Invention of Film

    In 1885 film was invented by George Eastman and William H. Walker. Film helped make motion pictures more easy and accessible to make. It was a roll of sensitized paper that was aable to capture images.
  • Introduction of Editing

    Editing is the cutting of raw footage of a film and placing it in a sequence. Before editing film were usually one still shot and all of the action happened in there. It allowed the use of multiple different camera angles to tell a deeper story. One of the first examples of editing is the film "Come Along, Do!" by Robert W. Paul.
  • The Featured Film

    Usually most of the films during this time were short films. "The Story of the Kelly Gang" introduced featured films, which is basically a long film. This film ran for over an hour and met great success.
  • The Introduction of Color

    Before color films were just in black and white. At first films were filmed in black and white and color was added by hand afterwards. It wasn't until the UK documentary dubbed "With our King and Queen through India" when film was captured with natural colors.
  • 3D in Film

    3D in movies was largely a gimmik to get more people to see the movie. There was many different technolgies made to try and achieve a 3D effect. The most popular were anaglyph, red and blue, glasses which were introduced in 1922's "The Power of Love"
  • The Introduction of Talkies

    Before talkies films were silent or they had a live orchrastra to go along with the film. People started to try and find ways to capture audio and video at the same time. "The Jazz singer" was the first ever film to have a synchronized audio track which featured vocal talents
  • Surround Sound in Movies

    Walt Disney was the first person who strived towards sorround sound in movies. In "Fantasia", he wanted the sound of a buzzing bee to go around the audience. Even though the audience loved it the technology was very expensive so it was only installed in two theatres.
  • Cinemascope

    Cinemascope was invented by 20th Century Fox and it was the introduction of widescreen to film. It was first introduces the the 1953 film "The Robe". Even though it was beaten by future technologies many of its standards we still use today.
  • CGI in Movies

    CGI made it possible to creat almost any image that a director wanted on screen. CGI became very popular and some films are composed of only CGI. The first use of 3D CGI is in 1976's "Future World".
  • Digital Cinematography

    Digital Cinematography allows the ease of storing film and editing. It also allows movies to be shot in higher resolution making images more clear. One of the firlst films to use digital photography is 1988's "Julia and Julia".
  • Higher Frame Rates

    Before films were typically shot at 24 frames per second. It wasn't until "The Hobbt: An Unexpected Journey" when the frame rate was increased to 48 frames per second. Although it was met with mixed criticisms many directors still use it.
