  • 1974 Disaster Relief Act

    1974 Disaster Relief Act
    President Nixon Signs the bill passing the Disaster Relief Act. Over 100 federal agencies were formed to deal with these issues.
  • FEMA is established

    FEMA is established
    Jimmy Carter makes the executive order to merge disaster agencies to form the Federal Emergency Magagment Agency (FEMA)

    President Reagan re interprets FEMA's role to incompise nuclear attack after the threat of the Cold War
  • Hurricane Hugo

    Hurricane Hugo
    A Catagory 4 hurricane that made landfall in South Carolina. Hugo Killed 27 people in South Carolina (34 in the Carribean) and left about 100,000 people homeless and resulte in 9 million dollars in damage. FEMA took heavy criticism for its slow respnce which lead to some reforms to FEMA in an attempt to speed up the process for future inidents.

    The stafford Act is put into effect which specified responsibilities that were delegated in the instance of a federally madated disaster.

    Third Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in United States which caused 26.5 billion dollars in damage. This was another time FEMA was criticised for not responding fast enough to the 250,00 left homeless in the effected area

    After the creation of Homeland Security in 2002, FEMA was absorbed by the Department of Homeland Security on orders from the President Bush's administration
  • Hurricane Katrina

    Hurricane Katrina
    1833 people were reported to be dead as a result of the hurricane. The storm caused over 100 billion dollars which spanned over several states. It has been placed on many lists as one of the worst hurricanes in US history. This was yet another time which FEMA took heavy criticism for its general unpreparedness, slow response, and ineffective measures.

    Post Katrina Emergency Management Act
    This reform act was the first major piece of legislation to come out post Katrina. Bill was made to amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002, and establish the United States Emergency Management Authority
