    John Newbery Bookstore

    John Newbery (1713-1767) opened a bookstore in St. Paul's Churchyard, London. The children's books that were sold here were meant to teach children proper behavior, but did not threaten them.

    Before the Early Years

    Chapbooks, battledores, and horn books were given to children to instruct them. Most threatened children with fire and brimstone if they did not behave as instructed by these books.
