    On 3 May 1916 he embarked at Sydney and disembarked at Egypt on 13 Jun 1916.
  • first time at the hospital

    On 8 Jul 1916 he was admitted to hospital with conjunctivitis. He was discharged to duty on 22 Jul 1916.
  • confinement

    25 Aug 1916 he was charged with overstaying leave from 1am to 6pm and disobedience of orders in failing to report back at the proper time, He was awarded 10 days confined to camp.
  • transfer

    On 22 Sep 1916 he transferred from the 49th Battalion to the 41st Battalion
  • second time at hospital

    16 Oct 1916 he was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital in England for stricture of the urethra. On 24 Nov 1916 he proceeded overseas to France ex Southampton
  • third time at hospital

    He was admitted to 11th AFH, Rouen, France with mumps on 2 Dec 1916. Entries on his casualty form show he also attended for mumps on 7th, 9th and 24th Dec. He re-joined his unit on 30 Dec 1916.
  • disobeying orders

    On 27 Mar 1917, he left the Billets at Le Bisel at 6pm without permission and failed to return there until 6am the following day. His absence without leave cost him 15 days of Field Punishment No. 2.
  • accidentally injured

    On 27 May 1917 he was accidentally injured and suffered senovitis (sic) on his left knee. (Synovitis of the knee is pain and swelling in the knee joint.) On his service record is the notation that a certificate of the soldier states: “I hereby declare that the injury sustained by me on 27 March 1917 did not occur whilst I was in the performance of military duty.”
  • fourth time in hospital

    On 13 Jun 1917 he was admitted to 1st Con depot sick in Boulogne, France. He returned to the front on 8 Jul 1917 and on 13 July 1917 he re-joined his battalion.
  • fith time in hospital

    On 2 Oct 1917 he was wounded in action and admitted to the Voluntary Aid detachment Cheltenham area with gunshot wounds to his left arm and right ankle.
  • family informed of his injuries

    19 Oct 1917 his family was advised by telegram of his injuries; his wounds were described as ‘severe’. He was invalided to England on the Carisbrook Castle on 20 Oct 1917.
  • family gets the good news

    8 Nov 1917 his family was advised by telegram that he was removed from the seriously ill list and on 20 Nov 1917 his name appeared in a list of names of soldiers wounded, printed in The Argus (Melbourne) newspaper on page 8, List No. 354.
  • discharged from hospital

    He was discharged from hospital on 8 Jan 1918 and spent the next two weeks in further rehabilitation at No. 3 Con. Depot, Hurdcott. He transferred to No. 2 Con. Depot at Weymouth on 11 Feb 1918.
  • finally

    On 12 Mar 1918 he embarked on the Kenilworth Castle from England for his return to Australia.
  • got married

    He married Isabell May Kelly on 24 Sept 1919 and they had three sons – Rex James (1921), Thomas Graham (1922) and Dean Alfred (1928).
  • passed away

    He died on 13 May 1976 at Kilcoy hospital and was cremated at Albany Creek Crematorium, Brisbane.
