  • Beginning of Colonial Immigration

    This was the beginning of a nation. Settlers from England arrived in America and began making a life for themselves. They were the first immigrants to come to America.
  • Massachusetts prohibits certain people from entering

    Massachusetts banned "lame, impotent" people from entering. This is similar to how in todays immigration system you have to meet a certain amount of requirements in order to live in the U.S. These restrictions were put in place because people thought it would make the nation stronger and more secure.
  • Naturalization Act created

    The Naturalization Act was about the set of rules for the United States to follow when granting citizenship to the country. It also had requirements that you had to follow--you had to be a resident for at least two years, etc.
  • Foreign Slave Trade is illegal

    Making the slave trade illegal caused the first illegal immigrants in U.S. history to be slaves that were involved in the slave trade.
  • First wave of European immigrants come to U.S.

    The first wave of European immigrants come to the United States at this time. This is due to events in Europe that caused some problems for people and their countries economic status. There were approximately 560,000 immigrants arriving to the U.S. per year.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    The chinese exclusion act is the start of the exclusion era. It was created to limit immigration and help the situation at hand, which was that there were anti-chinese riots occuring in the United States.
  • Ellis Island opens

    Over 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis island. Ellis island was a checkpoint for immigrants to enter the United States. It is known as the nations busiest immigrant inspection station in this era.
  • Supreme Court Confirms 14th amendment

    The 14th amendment gives citizenship to all people born in the United States.
  • Mexican Revolution

    The mexican revolution caused a lot of things to change in Mexico--their economy and political system were affected. This caused a lot of people to move to the U.S. in order to find jobs and help their families during this hard time.
  • Mounted Inspectors are authorized at the U.S. and Mexican border

    The U,S. allows mounted inspectors to be present at the U.S.and Mexican border. This was allowed becauae the U,S. wanted to do better at preventing illegal immigrants from coming across the border.
  • U.S. Labor Secretary estimates the amount of illegal immigrantsw coming from Mexico.

    It is estimated that there are over one million illegal immigrants in the United States that came from Mexico with Arizona having 60,000 out of that million. The smuggling across the border is analyzed and it's projected that the majority of illegal immigrants in the United States are coming from Mexico.
  • Secure Fence Act

    This act authorizes fencing around the U.S. and Mexico border. This act aimed to secure the United States and to take action to stop illegal immigrants from entering the United States,
  • S.B. 1070

    This law regards Arizona and it's stricter tactics to stop illegal immigrants in the U.S. It is known as the strictest anit-illegal immigration measure in a long time. It recieved a lot of attention because of this.
  • U.S. Supreme Court and Arizona Law

    The supreme court supports the Arizona law put into place to penalize businesses for hiring illegal immigrants. A lot of other states have laws similar to this. This is important because it supports the United States against illegal immigrants.
  • Barack Obama's Executive order against illegal deportation

    President Obama states that he wants to prevent illegal deportation from happening. WIth this plan, he will let around 4.4 millions immigrants who are parents of citizens or legal residents to stay in the United States to temporarily remain in the U.S.
