Hans Reichenbach

  • Hans Reichenbach birth - 26 September 1891

    Hans Reichenbach was born on 26 September 1891. He was born to Bruno Reichenbach and Selma Menzel. Hans was one of five of the children that his parents had together. His parents were Jewish but were also part of a reformed church. Being Jewish in that time period was scary for many Jews because this was at the height of the Hitler era. Hans went to college at first to become an engineer but after a year he switched over to philosophy, mathematics, and physics courses.
  • Theory of Probability Published

    In 1916 Hans first thesis was published. His thesis had a mathematical part and a philosophical part. He focused on the philosophical aspects of the theory of probability. He looked at the logical way of thinking instead of the mathematical way of thinking for example in calculus he explained the logical part of it. No one wanted to publish him at first but then he eventually found two publishers, one for the mathematical part and one for the philosophical part.
  • Berlin Circle

    Hans Reichenbach started the Berlin Circle in the 1920s. It consisted of a group of philosophers and scientists. The Berlin Circle’s name was Die Gesellschaft für Empirische Philosophie (Society for Empirical Philosophy). They were active in analyzing contemporary physics and so much more. After the rise of the Nazi era many of the members left Germany. One of the members, Grelling, was killed in a concentration camp. After the move of everyone the Berlin Circle was dispersed.
  • Hans Reichenbach Death

    Hand died of an unexpected heart attack in Los Angelas. He was working on two pieces of work at the time of his death. After his death his wife worked to get both of his pieces of work published. Nomological statements and admissible operations was published in 1954 and the direction of time in 1956. If it wasn't for his wife we probably would have never gotten those pieces of work.
