  • Reichenbachs contributions to science pt. I

Hans Reichenbach, born 1891 in Hamburg Germany, was one of the leading Empiricists of his time. an Empiricist is someone who believes that only theories that can offer complete and observable proof of concept are the only theories to be deemed important. Reichenbach is most often recognized for his works on the philosophical implications of the laws of Probability.

Induction does not work in all cases, Try to think of this example. There is a prisoner sitting on Death Row. In the classic sense of Induction each day that he sits on Death Row waiting, the more likely that he will survive the next day. But, in reality, the opposite is true. This term (coined by Reichenbach) is called Cross-Induction, this is when you take into account evidence that accounts for the contrary of the first induction.

In Hand Reichenbach's 1949 paper titled "The theory of Probability", he takes some of the philosophical questions that seem to plague the concepts that are associated with Probability. One such concept is that of Induction, Induction can be defined as the effect that observed outcomes have on non-observed outcomes. What do I mean by this? Every day since the formation of the Planet Earth, the Sun has gone down and come back up, therefore we can infer that the same thing will happen tomorrow.
