    Black Tuesday was called the day the stock market crashed. This was the beginning of the Great Depression. The market had lost a total of 89%.
  • Dust Bowl

    The Dust Bowl was a drought on the great plains. It foreclosed farms and most food supply. Because the land was useless for farming many families were forced to leave their homes, they were classified as "Okies."
  • Hawley – Smoot Tariff

    Hawley – Smoot Tariff
    This tariff came after the Fordney-McCumber tariff rasing it even more. Smoot was a Republican from Utah and Willis C. Hawley was a Republican from Oregon. It increased tariffs on agricultural and industrial goods.
  • 20th Amendment

    20th Amendment
    The 20th Amendment changes the lame duck period. Basically it establishes the beginning and ending of the terms of the elected federal offices. IT changed March 4th to January 20th.
  • TVA

    TVA
    TVA stands for Tennessee Valley Authority. It provides navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development in the Tennessee Valley. TVA is both a power supplier and a regulatory agency.
  • NRA

    NRA
    NRA stands for National Recovery Administration. It was the primary New Deal agency established by U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt. The NRA is symbolized by the Blue Eagle.
  • FDIC

    FDIC
    FDIC stands for Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. It was created by the Glass–Steagall Act of 1933. It insured savings accounts in banks approved by the government.
  • SEC

    SEC
    SEC stands for U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The purpose of this was to regulate the stock market and prevent corporate abuses. The SEC is responsible for administering seven major laws that govern the securities industry.
  • WPA

    WPA
    WPA stands for The Works Progress Administration. It fed children and redistributed food, clothing, and housing. At its peak in 1938 it provided paid jobs for three million unemployed men (and some women), as well as youth.
  • Wagner Act

    Wagner Act
    Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the president to sign this legislation into the law. It defined and prohibited five unfair labor practices. The act was immediately controversial.
  • Social Security Act

    Social Security Act
    It was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The term Social Security covered unemployment insurance. The main part of the program is sometimes abbreviated OASDI (Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance) or RSDI (Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance).
  • Court Packing

    Court Packing
    This plan was proposed by Franklin Roosevelt to add more justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. It was anounced on March 9, 1937, on one of Roosevelt's Fireside chats.
