  • 543 BCE

    Cambrian Period: 543-488MYA

A large number of new animal species appear in a relatively short time. First fish appear; no sign of life on land yet.
  • Period: 541 BCE to 500 BCE

    Paleozoic era - 541MYA

  • 488 BCE

    Ordovician Period: 488-443MYA

First land plants appear. Primitive fungi and sea weed appears. The oceans are full of coral, mollusks, worms, primitive fish, and echinoderms such as starfish.

Amphibians dominate the land. Early cone-bearing plants appear. Period ends with the largest mass extinction known with 95% of all marine life and 50% of all animals extinct.
  • 251 BCE

    Triassic Period: 251-200MYA

The few survivors of the Permian extinction go on to populate the land and oceans. new species like mammals, dinosaurs, and crocodiles appear.
  • Period: 251 BCE to 65 BCE

    Mesozoic Era: 251-65MYA

  • 200 BCE

    Jurassic Period: 200-145MYA

  • 145 BCE

    Cretaceous Period: 145-65MYA

Marsupials, modern sharks, bees and butterflies appear. Flowering plants appear. Period ends with mass extinction of all dinosaurs and many plants.
  • 65 BCE

    Paleogene Period: 65-23MYA

Rise of mammals and birds. Rodents, primates, pigs, cats, dogs, bears, and whales appear. Flowering plants spread across the globe.
