Even though his father pushes Galileo to learn medicine, Galileo was inspired to learn mathematics and science when he saw a lamp that swing side to side. Eventually, Galileo convince his father to let him stop studying medicine.

Galileo publishes a small book about the design of one of his inventions, which allows one to weigh objects above and below water. This gains him attention among scholarly circles.

  • University Professor

    University Professor
In 1592 Galileo moved to University of Padua and taught geometry, mechanics, and astronomy. During this period Galileo made many significant discoveries. (for example, strength of materials and improvement of the telescope). Astrology was one of Galileo greatest interest. As it was tied with science and mathematics at the time.
  • The Telescope

    The Telescope
Galileo learned of the invention of the telescope in Holland and was able to create one of his own. His telescope proved to be much more advanced. While the others that were being produced throughout Europe could magnify objects up to 3 times, Galileo created one which could magnify objects twenty times. This event is significant because with his telescope he made many important discoveries.
  • The Starry Night Sky

    The Starry Night Sky
Galileo viewed the Moons surface and to his surprise, found that it is uneven and rough. This includes the moons craters and mountains. He also found three small satellites (moons) that were rotating about Jupiter. His findings supported the Copernican idea that the motion of the planets is heliocentric. If there were moons that did not revolve around Earth, it was possible that Earth was not the center of the universe. Galileo had many thoughts and theory’s. And again he published another book.
  • His position

    His position
Galileo traveled to Rome to introduce his invention, ‘the Telescope’. He was warmly accepted at Rome. Galileo writes three letters to formally take his position on the heliocentric theory of the universe
  • The disbelief

    The disbelief
Galileo was sent before the Inquisition (Government) in a trial over Galileo's "dangerous" ideas. Galileo was then forced to admit his mistakes to the public while copies of his various books were destroyed. At the end of the trial, church officials sentenced Galileo to spend the rest of his life in jail, however that was later changed to house arrest. Galileo lived the rest of his life in Florence. This event is significant because Galileo would not be able to express his ideas any longer.
