The first Africans came into the British colonies in 1619:
that is when slavery started.
Africans were brought to America by white Americans to become slaves, they were taken by ships.
Slavery ended in 1865. -
Jim Crow Laws were written
A few years after slavery ended, in 1877, the Jin Crow Laws were written. The jin Crow Laws were laws written for the segregation (separation of colored people and white people) Each state of the USA had their own laws. There were different categories such as education, marriage, restaurants, public transports... For exemple, white people were not allowed to marry colored people. -
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person in a bus
Rosa parks was born in 1913 in Tuskegee,USA. She was a famous activist known for refusing to give up her seat to a white person in a bus. She died of natural causes in her apartment in Detroit in 2005 at the age of 92. -
John F. Kennedy became the president of the United States
John F. Kennedy became the president in 1960. He was born in 1917 in Brooklin, USA. He was the 35th president of the United States. He was one of the first presidents to support the civil rights movement by trying to end segregation. He died in 1963 in Dallas,USA (he was assassinated) -
First colored person to enter a white school
Ruby was the first of six children to enter a white school at the age of 6 years old in 1960. During a whole year, there was a mob of white angry parents who where yelling and threatening to harm her. Ruby didn't understand because her parents didn't explain anything to her. Homewer, at school she was welcomed by a white woman who was always nice to her. Here is the Ruby Bridges testimony. -
desegration of the public transports
"Freedom Riders" helped desegrate the public transports so that blacks and whites could be equal in buses and all other transports. -
"I have a dream" speech
"I have a dream" was a famous speech delivered by Martin Luther king Jr. Martin Luther king was born in 1929 in Atlanta. In 1963, he gave a very famous speech "I have a dream". He was non-violent and oraganised many marches to protest. He was also friend with president Kennedy. He was assassinated on April 4,1968. -

The author of this painting is Norman Rockwell. He made this painting in 1964 to denounce the inequalities between Blacks and Whites in the USA during the 1960s. In the middle of the painting, we can see a little black girl. She is wearing a white dress and she has books in her hands. She is escorted by US Marshalls that are on the left and right sides of the painting. In the background we can see racial slurs and crashed tomatoes that were thrown at the girl. -

The voting rights act was passed in1965 and it gave the right to vote to all African-Americans -

After the Civil right act in 1964, the voting rights act in 1965 and the Civil rights act in 1968 the jim crow laws and the segregation were definitively abolished in USA in the laws
