Elizabeth is adopted

Victor's dad travels to Milan and finds Elizabeth, where she is a foster child. Elizabeth is then adopted into the Frankenstein family. (Pg. 30-31)

Beaufort dies

Beaufort was Victor's father's very close friend. Beaufort used to be very wealthy, but he slipped into poverty, and later died of a bad sickness. (pg.27-28)

A tree gets struck by lightning

While in the woods, Victor witnesses a tree getting struck by lightning. This ignites his interests in science and alchemy (pg. 36)

Victor starts researching alchemy

After witnessing the tree getting struck by lightning, Victor becomes interested in alchemy and that field of science. He then starts to read the ancient works of scientists such as Agrippa. (pg.34-36)

Victor's mom dies

During this time, Elizabeth had caught the scarlett fever so Victor's mom was acting has her nurse while trying to cure her. Although Elizabeth wasa cured, Victor's mom caught the scarlett fever from her, and shortly after she passes away. (pg. 39)

Victor meets a professor at Ingolstadt

Victor moves away from his family to go study at Ingolstadt, where he meets M. Waldmen. This professor becomes a mentor type figure to Victor in helping him pursue his interests in science. (pg. 42-43)

Victor becomes obsessed

Victor becomes obsessed with his desire to create life in an inanimate object. As a result of this, he isolates himself from the world, staying inside all the time and not talking to any of his friends or family. (pg. 49)

Victor makes his discovery

After countless hours of work and research, Victor is able to make his discovery about how to being life to an inanimate object. However, to make this discovery, Frankenstein puts his health in danger by staying up for days and working through hard labor and fatigue. (pg. 47)

character development- Victor gets very ill

In chapters 1-2, Victor explains his personality as a child, which is very innocent, curious, and lives an idyllic life. Then in chapters 3-5, his mood transitions into sad and obsessive. At this same time, Victor also isolates himself from the world around him. Because of countless hours of work, and no more adrenaline, Victor becomes very ill at the end of chapter 5. (pg. 56)

Victor creates the monster

In this chapter, Victor is finally able to create the monster he has been working so hard on. However his fear takes over when the monster is lurking over his bed that night. (pg. 51-52)

Victor and Henry see each other

After getting scared of the monster and running away from home, victor runs into an old friend, Henry, who he had not talked to in years. This gave Victor joy that he had not experienced in years due to his research and experiments. (pg. 53)

Victor experiences nature

"When happy, inanimate nature had the power of bestowing on me the most delightful sensations. A serene sky and verdant fields filled me with ecstasy"(p63). Victor realizes that he finds calmness in nature. Because of this self discovery, Victor stays in nature and begins to spend lots of time there (pg. 63)

William is Murdered

Victor's body is found, dead. The murderer is not yet found but Justine is a suspect. "William is dead! That sweet child, whose smiles delighted and warmed my heart, who was so gentle, yet so gay! Victor, he is murdered!" (pg.64)

Justine is executed

After her trial for being the suspected murderer of William, she confesses to the murder, even though she is guilty. As a result of this, Justine is executed. "Farewell, sweet lady, dearest Elizabeth, my beloved and only friend... And on the morrow Justine died" (pg.79)

Victor becomes very depressed

Because he feels so guilty and responsible for the deaths of Justine and William, Victor becomes very depressed. "This state of mind preyed upon my health...I shunned the face of man; all sound of joy or complacency was torture to me; solitude was my only consolation- deep, dark, deathlike solitude" (Pg. 80).

Victor Meets the Monster

While exploring the nature of Believe, Victor sees a large shape in the distance. As this shape gets closer, he realizes it's his creation. "I perceived, as the shape came nearer (sight tremendous and abhorred!) that it was the wretched whom I had created." (pg.88)

The monster meets the family

While telling his story to Victor, the monster begins to describe the family of villagers. This family is very important to the plot of the story, effecting many things in the future. "I found that the cottages had a means of prolonging light by the use of tapers, and was delighted to find that the setting of the sun did not put an end to the pleasure in watching my human neighbors." (pg. 98)

The monster explains his journey to Victor

In chapter 12, the monster informs us of how he lived amongst the villagers (hiding in a small den). He also describes to the reader some of his observations of the family he watches and how he begins to learn the meaning of a few words "I learned and applied the words 'fire' 'mik' 'bread' and 'wood'. I learned also the names of the cottagers themselves." (pg.101)

The monster learns to speak

Because Felix's family was exiled to France to Germany, when Safie arrived (from France), she did not know how to speak the language that Felix's family spoke. The family gave her many lessons on how to speak their language, which is when the monster listened, learning to speak at the same time as Safie. "My days were spent in close attention, that i might more speedily master the language; and I may boast that I improved more rapidly than the Arabian." (pg. 106)

Character development- Victor listens to the monster's story

In chapters 6-14, Victor goes from finding tranquility in nature, to feeling responsible and very guilty for the deaths of William and Justine. This leads him to being very depressed. Victor's mood then shifts to rage when he encounters the monster, and then transitions to being more curious to find out the monster's story. "But I consented to listen; and, seating myself but the fire which my odious companion had lighted, he thus began his tale", (pg. 90).

The monster learns Safie and Felix's story

Felix and Safie first met because Felix had accidentally been present at her father's trial trial, where he was imprisoned. Felix later went down to visit him, where he met Safie, and they fell in love. They then worked together to try to help Safie's dad escape from prison. "They remained confined for five months before the trial took place, the result of which deprived them of their fortune and condemned them to a perpetual exile from their native country." (pg.112)

The monster tries to approach the De Lacey's

One day while Safie, Felix, and Agatha are all on a walk, the monster goes into the cottage to talk to De Lacey. Things are going well until the 3 kids suddenly return to the cottage. Frightened by the monster's appearance, Felix gets him away De Lacey and out of the cottage. The family then moves shortly after. (pg. 118-120)

The Monster Kills William

Because the De Laceys reject the monster, he says he will revenge on humans and his creator, Victor. The monster runs into William in the woods, and when he hears that his father is Alphonse Frankenstein, the father of both William and Victor, he strangles William. (pg. 126-127)

The monster asks for a companion

After the monster is finished telling his story, he asks Victor to build him another creature like himself in order to have a companion. He says that this will allow him to be not so violent because he won't be lonely. He also claims that him and his companion will go far far away from any human civilization. For the meantime, this convinces Victor to create the companion. (pg. 129)

Victor agrees to marry Elizabeth

At this point, Victor was still very depressed over William's death, he says that the thought of marrying Elizabeth is the only happiness in his life. Alphonse suggests having the wedding the next day, but Victor refuses until he has handled the obligation with his monster. Victor then asks to go to England to study, and Alphonse agrees. (pg. 135-136)

Victor begins the companion monster

After journeying through England and Scotland, victor grows eager to build the monster to free himself of his bond to the monster. He then tells Henry to stay in Scotland with a friend, so he can go isolate himself to work on the companion for his monster. He soon realizes how unsatisfying it is to build another monster. (pg. 144-146)

Victor is accused of murder

After realizing that he can't bring himself to create another monster, Victor destroys his progress and goes to dump it in the ocean. However, a storm comes, taking him to a different shore, and when he wakes up, there is a rude crowd of townspeople accusing him of murder. (pg. 147-154)

In chapters 15-20, Victor goes from being indecisive and confused after asked to create another monster to having hope when he begins his second creation. He feels this hope because it will free him from his bond of the monster. After stopping his progress, Victor becomes relieved and scared for what the future holds, and gets confused again when accused of murder. "Their faces expressed a mixture of curiosity and anger, which... in some degree alarmed me",(pg.154).

Henry is murdered

After the townspeople accuse Victor of murder, the judge takes him to go see the body, and it turns out that it is Henry who has died. He has marks on his neck, telling victor that the monster murdered him. "The examination, the presence of the magistrate and witnesses, passed like a dream from my memory, when I waw the lifeless form of Henry Clerval stretched before me", (pg. 156-157)

Elizabeth and Victor get married

Once Victor returns from his time in jail, he and Elizabeth get married right away and then journey to a cottage to stay the night. "After the ceremony was performed a large party assembled at my father's; but it was agreed that Elizabeth and I should commence our journey by water, sleeping that night at Evian", (pg. 170).

Elizabeth dies

The night of Victor and Elizabeth's wedding, the monster kills Elizabeth. "She was there, lifeless and inanimate, town across he bed, her head hanging down, and her pale and distorted features half covered by her hair", (pg. 173)

Character development- Victor meets Walton

Victor gets to the part of his story where he meets Walton in the north, while looking for the monster. "I, myself was about to sink under the accumulation of distress when I saw your vessel riding at anchor, and holding forth to me hopes of succor and life", (pg. 184). Victor goes from severe grief from the deaths of Elizabeth and his father, to violence with anger at the monster, and then he has hope when he meets Walton on his ship.

Victor tracks the monster

Victor tracks the monster and wants to kill him. "Scoffing devil! Again do I vow vengeance; again do I devote thee, miserable fiend, to torture and death," (pg. 181)

Walton explains that he thinks Victor is telling the truth by saying, "I own....the letters of Felix and Safie...and the apparition of the monster seen from out ship, brought me to a greater conviction of the truth of his narrative," (pg. 185). In these letters he also explains that Victor is very sick and he tells Walton to continue his vengeance against the monster. When Victor dies, the monster comes, but Walton lets him leave the ship and doesn't harm him.
