  • kinetescope parlor

    The kinetescope parlor was the first open "movie thatre", they called it movie images. In the parlor you would look through a peephole and watch moving images. Thomas Edison only permitted one person into the parlor at a time, this way he believed he would earn more money. Thomas edison then invented a projector and would premiere movies, mostly 20-30 seconds.

    In 1895 another inventor by the name of Robert William Paul wanted to make thomas's invention better so he created the projector. Instead of showing the movie to one person he wanted to show the movie sto a full audience. Another inventor and france made an even better product at the same time called the cinematograph, consisted of a camera, printer and a projector.
  • Nickelodeons

    Nickleodeons were small theatres that cost a nickel to get into. Henry Miles is the man who rented movies to the theatres. usually they would have people make sound effects to make the film more entertaining.
  • Early techniques

    In 1902, Georges Méliès, filmed an exhibiting film about his magician shows. George was also the first to create space travel movies.He also made multi narritive scenes as long as 15 minutes.
  • 1903 train robbery

    In 1903n, the great train robbery premiered. It was 1 minutes long, longer than the usual 30 second movies. Edwin S. Porter was the leading director.
  • films are booming!

    In 1910 The Nickelodeon theatre started to boom and attracted 12 million people per week. Film popularity started to increase and what better way to take advantage, like starting a monopoly. Thomas Edison then started the MPPCA.
  • Monopoly

    Thomas Edison didnt want others to start creating there own movies so created a monopoly. This let Edison control all equipment and have control over making films. Independent companies tried to compete but could have all there equipment taken away.

    By this time world war broke out, interupting the film era. California still kept its spot for being the number one place tofilm.
  • Charlie Chaplin

    This was the year silent films started to be popular. Charlie Chaplin was one of the richest actors starting from 150 a week to more than a million dollars a year.Charlie Chaplins films discussed the good and evil of things.

    By 1920 the Us posted about 800 films a year. Charlie chaplin and many other comics made more apperances and started being known as icons.
  • No more silence

    Gangster films a like Little ceasear begin to become popular films. Dialogue was more prestige than silent films. Years later movies like The Wizard of Oz started and Gone with the wind came out.

    During these years movies about war began to become popular. Movies like " Went the day"well?" and "The way ahead". Movies of propaganda and patriotism, and the view of war were created.
