Discovery of Motion Pictures

1873

Eadweard Muybridge discovered motion pictures through a bet with his jolly ol' pals. To prove that while a horse runs all 4 of its legs were in the air at some point. He took sequential pictures of a horse running and realized that if you looked at them quickly it showed movement.

First Motion Picture Camera

1888

Louis le Prince tried patenting the first motion picture camera before disappearing but the invention's credit was given to Thomas Edison. He disappeared on 16 September 1890 and was never able to publicly display his invention. He made the single and 16-lens camera.

First Films Publicly Projected

1895

The Lumiere Brothers were the first people to show an audience a film through projection instead of kinetoscope. It cost one-franc to enter and watch a 30-second film. One of the first motion pictures shown was of a train, which scared viewers so much that that jumped out of the way. They patented the word "cinemategraphe" which is why we call it cinematography to this day.

First Narrative Film

1903

The Great Train Robbery was the first film with narration. It was made by Edwin Porter, an employee of Thomas Edison. It was 12 minutes long, which was quiet lengthy in that day in age when "movies" wee normally 30 seconds long.

First over-the-air Public Broadcast

1910

The broadcast was made by Lee de Forest, an inventor. He was also the first person who coined the term "radio". This invention changed history forever, we still use radios to this day.

The Kid

Charlie Chaplin releases his first feature film, “The Kid” which was a huge milestone in his amazing career. This movie is his most well known. It was a great leap in film history for movie actors and stars.

Little Caesar is released

1931

This movie was one of The Warner Brother's most known films at this time. This film started the gangster movie era that The Warner Brothers were known for at the time. It waas a melodrama.

Citizen Kane is released

1941

This film is known as the Greatest of all time. This movie changed the film industry forever and will always be known as a classic. It used innavative narrative techinques that moved teh audience.

From Here to Eternity is Released

1953

This movie transcended the bounds of film. It included controversial topics like homosexuality and adultery. This was one of the first provocative films in this genre.

Marilyn Monroe is Dead

1962

This amazing actress changed the fil industry for not only women but actors in general. She spoke on controversial topics and her death was a major blow for the film industry. she is now known as an American staple of film and fame.

Star Wars is released

1977

Ths series is, debatably, the best series in American history. The director was George Lukas. This movie is obviously very good because it is still a huge part in modern culture.

First Movie to Show a Character Using a Cell Phone

1987

The movie was Lethal Weapon. This really showed the progression of technology through the decades and was the start of the technology revolution.
