  • The Bet

    The spark that created film was a 25000 bet. A bet about a horse when its running full speed. The question was does all four of its feet leave the ground at one point. An experiment was set up where a rapid sequence of photos were taken.
  • Hollywood Beginning

    Landowners Harvey & Daeida Henderson Wilcox name their ranch Hollywood after Daeida met a woman in Ohio whose country house was called “Hollywood” for the English holly and woods.
  • First Film

    The first real film, Roundhay Garden Scene, made by Louis Le Prince in Roundhay,Leeds, England is now know as the earliest surviving motion picture.
  • Dickson Greeting

    First American film shown to a public audience.
  • First Exhibition

    First commercial exhibition of motion pictures in history was given in New York City, using 10 kinetoscopes.
  • The Great Train Robbery

    The first US epic narrative film is shot and lasted 12 min. It is considered a milestone in film making
  • Nickelodeon

    Nickelodeon first type of indoor exhibition space dedicated to show projected motion pictures. The term was popularized by Harry Davis and John P. Harris who opened their small storefront theatre on Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh.
  • First Cartoon

    One of the earliest examples of handrawn animation is released. It is also considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon ever.
  • MPPC

    A trust of all the major American film companies. Founded by Thomas Edison. Edison basically owned the movie business. It made it hard for independent film makers.
  • 9000 Theatres

    There are 9000 movie theatres in the United States.
  • First Color Movie

    Thomas Lincoln Tally shows the first color movie at the Electric Theater in Hollywood.
  • Lincoln Motion Picture Company

    The first African American owned film production company was incorporated in California with a capitalization of $75,000.
