His father, Federico García Rodríguez, was a prosperous landowner with a farm surrounding Granada and a comfortable villa in the heart of the city. When he was 11 yeras old, he moved with all his family to the city of Granada due to familiar reasons and because there was a place for Lorca to study.

He travelled to New York with Fernando de los Rios. They went to this city by the RMS Olympic, a sister liner to the RMS Titanic. In New York City, Rios started a lecture tour and García Lorca enrolled at Columbia University School of General Studies.
