    Ellen Richards

    Ellen Richards is a founder of AAFCS. She lunched the new field. She began the school lunch program in 1894. Ellen was a powerful leader.She tested products for nutrituous lunches at the 1894 Chicago World's Fair (Rumford Kitchen)

    W.O. Atwater

    W.O atwater invented the bomb calorimeter. He wrote nutriten bulltions for Richards' paper. He also created the metabolic chart.
  • Morrill Act of 1862

    President Lincon signed it into law. This law was donating public lands to colleges. Each state gets 30,000 acrs of ferderal land for each member in congress.

    A land grant university is benefit of the morrill act of 1862. They get to use the land.

    Martha Van Rensselaer

    Rensselaer was a Cornell University professor. She attended Lack Placid Conference in 1899. Rensselaer also developed the cooperative extension serviece. She was also the President of AAFCS.

    Carolyn Hunt

    Hunt conducted two important studies of immigrant and ethnic populations in Chicago.
  • Lake Placid Conference

    Eleven leaders gatherd in Lake Placid, NY. This is where the name Home Economics was adopted.
  • Amercian Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

    This is when the name changed from Amercain Home Economics Assoication to AAFCS.
  • Smith Lever Act of 1914

    A federal law that establised the systems of cooperative extension services, connected to te land-grant univesities to inform people about the developments of the agriculture,home and econimics.
  • Smith Hughes Act of 1917

    This act provided federal aid to states for the purpose of promoting vocational education in agricultural trades and in home economics for secondary education.
  • Vocational Education Act of 1963

    This act provided grants to states to improve and develop vocational education.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1968

    Extenstion of the Vocational Education Act of 1963. This act provides federal funs for vocational edcation programs.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1973

    Title IX, this amendment prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs.
  • Vocational Amendment of 1976

    This amendment requires states to develop and carry out programs to eliminate gender bias, discrimination and steryotyping in vocational education.
  • Carl Perkins Vocational Act of 1984

    Authorized by the federal government, aims to increase the quality of technical education in the U.S.
  • Carl Perkins Act of 1990

    This is the Applied Technology Act of 1990. The academic measures and contextual learning became major points to look at. More action was taken to help economically-disadvantaged students.
  • Scottsdale Conference

    The AHEA voted to change their name to AAFCS.
  • UCA name change

    In Aug 1994, UCA changed the name from AHEA to AAFCS
  • Carl Perkins Act of 2006

    The act is to develop the academic, career and technical skills of secondary education students and postsecondary education students who are in a career and technical education program.
