Education wasn't always on line, but it was always needed. Education started in the home and moved to be taught in schools. As colleges and universities needed to make education available to more people they offered classes thru the mail. These classes were called correspondence course.

I 1891, the International Correspondence School in Scranton is founded. In less than 20 years the school was able to reach 1 million students. That was alot of mail!

In the 1920 - 1930's Over 200 educational radio stations were licensed to colleges and universities. In 1922 Penn State began offering courses via the radio.

In the 1930's - 1940's Education became a vehicle to providing education to the public.

In 1950 Iowa State University offers its first regular educational TV station. In 1951 Western Reserve University begins to offer credit courses via TV and in 1953 the University of Houston follows offering their televised courses.

Cable and sateitte TV are new and becoming popular in providing closer and more immediate access to the world of information and education.

The Internet and the World Wide Web has changed every aspect of the world with new communications and world wide access to information. Distance learning has become popular, but Congress intervened and discontinued federal aid to schools of higher learning until Congress realized the popularity and demand for distance learning. Their intervention was rescinded.

In 1997, California Virtual University in a collaborative effort with several other colleges in California offer more than 700 on-line courses. Now in 2018, on-line classses and degree programs are being offered in all parts of the whole thru colleges and universities world wide. The growth continues along with its popularty.
