Evolution of National Citizenry

  • Nationality Act

    This was one of the first laws regarding citizenship and it was mainly for "free white people"
  • Ban on immigration of colored people

    The southern region in U.S. was scared that if they allowed immigrants from other places come, it would lead to more revolts to end slavery.
  • Indian Removal Act

    This act forced the Native Americans off of their land and forced them to move, or be tortured so Americans would have their territory.
  • People vs. Hall

    A chinese man witnessed a murder but it was dismissed in court because Native Americans, Chinese, and African Americans were not allowed to testify against white people.
  • Dred Scott vs. Sanford

    Supreme Court ruled that African Americans were not citizens, nor did they get rights of being a citizen.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Abraham Lincoln made an executive order to free all slaves in the Confederate states.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th Amendment was created to give citizenship to those born in the U.S.
  • 15th Amendment

    This Amendment was created to let people vote regardless of color, race, or previous condition of servitude.
  • Jones-Shafroth Act

    This act gave Puerto Ricans a right to migrate within the U.S. territory after the U.S. gained Puerto Rico.
  • Cuban Adjustment Act

    This act provided those who were anti-communists were granted permanent status and resources to help create a life in America.
  • Immigration Reform and Control Act

    This was created to provide a chance for long term residents to become citizens while also enforcing more security at borders and making jobs have more requirements.
