Events of the Cold War

  • The Marshall Plan

    Secretary of State George C. Marshall called for assistance from Americ ain restoring the economic infrastructure of Europe. The plan was a massive aid program to rebuild Europe's economic infrastructure. Soviet Union and Communist Eastern Europe declined U.S. aid citiing dollar enslavement.
  • Creation of NATO

    The North ATlantic Treaty Organization was a formal alliance between territories of North America and Europe. The main purpose was to defend each other from the possibility of communist Soviet Union taking control of their nation.
  • China Becomes Communist

    Mao Zedong announced the People's Republic of China, thereby stating that China was now Communist. The communists would take over and area and then distribute the land to peasants and reduced the rents. Popularity for communism soon grew.
  • The Korean War

    After North Korea invated South Korea, the U.S. dominated UN coalition went to aid of South Korea. North Korea gained the aid of the USSR and were allied with Communist China. This war brough tthe United States into military confrontation iwth Communist forces in Korea. This war ended July 27, 1953.
  • Creation of Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was considered the "Treaty of mutual friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance." It was the communist counteraction to the creation of NATO.
  • Vietnam War

    United States and the RVN (Republic of Vietnam) opposed the revolutionary movement known as Viet Cong and DRV (Communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam). IN 1975, the communist were victorious which was not only a setback to the containment of Communism in Asia, but it shocked American self-confidence.
  • Soviet Launches Sputnik

    The world's first aritifical satellite, Sputnik, was launched in 1957 by the Soviet Union successfully. This only contributed to the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The major worry from the United States was the fear of the Soviets being able to launch ballistic missiles that could carry nuclear weapons from Eruope to the United States.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The U.S. attempted to invade Cuba an doverthrow premier Fidel Castro. On April 17, exiles who were armed with weapons of the United States landed at Bay of Pigs. They were hoping to gain support from the population but Castro's army defeated them.
  • US Sends Man to Moon

    As the Space Race continues between the Soveit Union and the United States, the US sends Neil Armstrong into space with the goal of not only landing on the moon, but walking on it. Armstrong takes his first steps onto the moon in May 1961. This placed the US far ahead of the Soviets.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    President Kennedy was shown pictures of secet missile bases in Cuba that had been built by the Soviet Union with Castro's approval on October 16. 6 days later, PResident Kennedy made an address presenting Americans with infromation that there have been weapons discovered. He also stated that an attack from Cuba would be considered an attack from the Soviet Union and ergo would be treated with fitting reactions.
  • 6 Day War

    The six day war was the Israelis versus Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. After the six days of fighting, the Arabs took a huge toll as a result.Syria, Jordan, and Egypt had been harshly attacked by the surprised Irsaraelis. Israel was stunned by the outcome because they hadn't predicted such success and triumph.
  • US invades Grenada

    President Ronald Reagan declared for Marines to go to Grenada in response to a threat of Communism spreading into the Caribbean island. United States Marines were victorious.
  • German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall

    Schabowksi, leader of East Berlin's Communist Party, said in unclear statments that the border between West and East Germany would be opened for "private trips abroad." Celebrations began at the Brandenburg Gate and days after, demolition took place. July 1, 1990, ecomonic, monetary and social union between East and West Germany was formed.
  • Collapse fo the Soviet Union

    Soviet Union collapsed into fifteen separate countries. It was considered a triumph for those who favored democracy over totalitrarianism. This ended the Cold War.
